Osteoporosis

Strength sports are the most effective and can be practiced alternately with endurance sports. However, sport is not recommended when white or red blood cells are too low; medical advice is therefore recommended.

For example, the gain in lean mass was 2kg to 2.5kg in young amateur athletes with comparable supplementation, compared to 0.7kg with the placebo. The amount of fat mass, however, did not vary.

A Significant Increase In Muscle Volume

Researchers recently conducted a study focusing on the effects of supplementation on muscle size more specifically. Forty-nine healthy young men underwent lower body training for 15 weeks. Part of them received 15g of collagen peptides; the other received a placebo. At the end of this period, muscle hypertrophy was more marked in the event of supplementation.  The increase in overall muscle volume reached 15.7% compared to 11.4% in the placebo group. The volume of the quadriceps, the main muscles targeted by the training protocol, increased by 15.2% compared to 10.3%.

They carried out quadriceps biopsies, taken before exercise, 1 hour, 4 hours, and 24 hours after. 

The analysis revealed that around thirty signaling pathways were stimulated when taking Collagen 4 hours after the session. Among them, some are involved in protein synthesis and muscle hypertrophy. The results were significant for 2 of them (PI3K-Akt and MAPK) and indicated an increasing trend for the mTOR pathway.

The effects of collagen supplementation on muscle strength need to be more consistent. They were positive in the study conducted in older men with sarcopenia. Only one other study, conducted among non-athlete women aged 18 to 50, showed a significant increase in this parameter. 

However, of the two aspects assessed – leg and grip strength – only grip strength improved with supplementation. It should be noted, however, that the link between the size of the cross-section of a muscle (or, more simply, its size) and its strength is well demonstrated. The impact of c collagen on muscle strength is likely not easily seen because most studies are too short (only three months).

In 40 young men trained with heavy loads for 14 weeks, taking 5g collagen peptides strengthened the structure of the Achilles tendon. The surface area of ​​its cross-section thus increased by 11% compared to 4.7% with the placebo. Supplementation reduces joint pain in athletes, at rest, or during various activities. It mainly relieves pain felt in the knees.

In athletes suffering from ankle instability, Collagen improves the situation and limits the risk of injury. Collagen supplementation facilitates the healing of tendinitis. A 6-month calf muscle strengthening program, alongside taking Collagen, accelerates the healing of Achilles tendinopathy and the return to sport.

Post-Exercise Recovery

Collagen supplementation may also aid recovery after intense training. A small study was conducted on eight amateur athletes who received 3g of hydrolyzed chicken cartilage extract or a placebo during the six weeks preceding a strength training challenge mobilizing the upper body (8 sets of bench press with a bar loaded at 75% of body weight).  It was then performed again three days later. Supplementation tempered the elevation of markers of muscle damage and inflammation (creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and C-reactive protein). It also limited the reduction in performance following the first challenge. 

Another study showed that supplementation with 15g of collagen peptides in bodybuilding practitioners helps mitigate the drop in performance 24 hours after sustained exercise. Better recovery of physical abilities 48 hours after a session of 150 jumps and a reduction in aches was also observed with a higher dose, 20g/day.

How Do You Supplement With Collagen In Bodybuilding?

Choosing a quality food supplement is essential to benefit fully from collagen supplementation.

Collagen is a by-product of the food industry that remains after extracting the noble parts of animals or fish, whose origin is often impossible to know. When we practice a sporting activity, our muscles produce small molecules that are still little known: myokines. These substances are hormones capable of activating key functions within cells throughout our body. Certain myokines have documented anti-aging effects.

What Are Myokines?

Regular sports practice has multiple benefits on our health, reducing the risk of developing chronic diseases or their intensity, and mortality in general. The biological mechanisms allowing these effects have long been partially understood. Today research indicates a very important role for myokines in mediating these effects. Myokines are small proteins secreted by muscle fibers when they contract. They act on the muscle itself (autocrine action) and the tissues surrounding it (paracrine action), they are also released into the blood circulation. They thus exert effects on more distant organs such as the liver, kidneys, brain, bones, intestine, etc. The muscle can thus be described as a secretory organ due to this hormonal action.

A Very Large Number Of Myokines

The term myokine was first introduced in 2003 by a Swedish researcher, Bengt Saltin. Until this point in time, more than 650 myokines have been recognized. Their role remains poorly understood: the specific functions of only 5% of them have been characterized. The most studied myokines are interleukins 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, and 18, as well as muscle, irisin, fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), myostatin, myonectin, and apelin. They could have therapeutic applications in the context of metabolic disorders because their deregulation in the event of a sedentary lifestyle is conducive to the occurrence of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Promising Anti-Aging Effects

To do this, they used muscle cell cultures from elderly (68 to 83 years old) and younger (16 to 27 years old) donors. Here again, the loss of apelin content during aging was highlighted, as well as the decline in the reactivity of muscle cells to produce this compound.

Anti-Catabolizing Effect Of Apelin

The researchers then looked at how the muscular system of animals deprived of the action of apelin evolved during aging. To do this, they used a mouse strain deficient in apelin or its receptors. In both cases, the result is the same: the body cannot benefit from the effects of the compound. They found the muscles of these animals deteriorated much earlier than those of their peers.

To demonstrate indisputably the role of apelin as a source of muscle rejuvenation, a final step was undertaken: the administration of this compound to aged animals. The approach was able to reverse sarcopenia, leading to a significant increase in muscle mass and the proportion of large-diameter fibers. Apelin stimulated the formation of new mitochondria, the energy-producing units, and promoted protein synthesis within sarcopenic muscle fibers. Additionally, it increased the amount of muscle stem cells and their ability to proliferate and fuse to regenerate damaged muscles. Previous work has shown that the anti-aging effects of apelin extend beyond the muscular sphere. Its administration slowed down the overall aging of the mouse organism and prolonged their life expectancy.

Cooperation Of Myokines Against Sarcopenia

Other myokines exert favorable effects in preventing muscle aging  :

  1. Irisin also induces muscle regeneration by activating stem cells.
  2. FGF21 prevents muscle atrophy caused by inflammatory conditions, often present in older people.
  3. Meteorin-like promotes the formation of new muscle tissue.
  4. IGF-1 is an essential myokine for muscle growth and regeneration. Low levels of this myokine are associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia.

By increasing the secretion of these myokines, physical exercise in the elderly can thus contribute to the maintenance of muscle function, reducing the risk of falls and fractures which often lead to loss of autonomy.

Anti-Aging Effect On The Brain

Myokines could also represent a means of slowing down brain aging and maintaining mental abilities over the years.

Preventing The Decline Of Mental Faculties

Sport has favorable effects on brain health and cognitive functions, particularly in the elderly population. A meta-analysis demonstrated the central role of physical activity in combating age-related cognitive decline . She synthesized data from 15 studies, covering nearly 34,000 non-demented people, followed for 1 to 12 years. During this period, 3,210 cases of reduced mental capacity were recorded.

The most physically active people had a 38% reduced risk of being affected. Those who maintained a low to moderate level of activity were also protected, with a 35% reduced risk compared to those who were inactive. Sport is also one of the approaches to reduce the risk of developing a neurodegenerative condition such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, or to alleviate the signs.

BDNF, Mediator Of The Benefits Of Sport On The Brain

Several mechanisms can explain the benefits of sport on the brain. Physical exercise improves blood circulation and oxygen supply within brain tissues and reduces levels of stress and inflammation… But these are not the only factors at play. It also acts on the production of an essential compound for the cerebral sphere, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).

BDNF is a major member of the neurotrophin family, a protein responsible for the growth, survival, and differentiation of cells belonging to the nervous system. In the brain, the highest levels of BDNF are found in the neurons of the hippocampus, a region involved in learning and memory phenomena. It is also present in significant quantities in the amygdala, cerebellum, and cerebral cortex.

Protection And Formation Of New Neurons

BDNF exerts its beneficial effects by binding to a receptor present on the surface of neurons, the tyrosine kinase receptor (TrkB). It then triggers cascades of reactions within them. One of the activated pathways – the Ras/MAPK/ERK signaling pathway – is involved in neurogenesis, in particular through the activation of transcription factors called CREB.

The ability to form new neurons from stem cells persists into adulthood in certain regions of the brain, particularly in the hippocampus. This phenomenon is important for maintaining brain functions over time. BDNF also promotes the development of structures that allow neurons to communicate with each other, axons, and dendrites. BDNF also plays a protective role, promoting neuronal survival through the IRS-1/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. It leads to the neutralization of compounds that promote cell death such as the Forkhead transcription factor or BAD proteins. Reduced BDNF Levels And Impaired Brain Health

Levels of BDNF circulating in the body tend to decrease with aging. This rarefaction is associated with a reduction in the volume of the hippocampus and the occurrence of memory problems. Irisin is one of the main myokines playing an anti-aging role in the brain. During exercise, it is released from the muscle from a protein called FNDC5 and released into the bloodstream. A team recently became interested in its potential protective effect in the context of Alzheimer’s disease. The highest inhibition is obtained with black tea, reaching 79 to 94%. Peppermint reduces it by 84%, cocoa by 71%, verbena by 59%, linden by 52% and chamomile by 47%.

These drinks can therefore help limit iron intake. The classic treatment for hemochromatosis is phlebotomy or bloodletting, which involves removing part of the blood to reduce the amount of iron in the body. Consuming black tea instead of water to accompany each meal allows patients to limit iron accumulation by a third, which can extend the time interval between two procedures.

Decorate Your Dish With Spices

Spices are also rich in polyphenols. Thai researchers tested the effects of adding chili, a spice mixture including chili, paprika, and turmeric to a meal of rice and vegetables, with iron-enriched fish sauce. The addition of 4.2g of chili containing 25mg of polyphenols reduced its absorption by 38%. Turmeric did not exert such an effect, suggesting that it depends on the nature of the polyphenolic compounds present.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), one of the best-studied polyphenols, is an interesting candidate for combating neurodegenerative diseases. Fat tissue produces many hormonal substances called adipokines. Most of these substances are known to have harmful effects on health. However, fatty tissue can also provide benefits, mainly when practicing high-intensity physical exercises such as weight training. In this article, we will see the role that fatty tissue plays in the development of muscular strength.

Fat Promotes Muscle-Building

Fatty tissue emits various messengers, which are grouped under the generic term adipokines. One of the main adipokines is leptin, mainly known for its appetite-regulating effects, thanks to the feeling of satiety it confers. It also participates in the metabolism of glucose and lipids and is involved in immunity, reproduction, or the control of blood pressure.

It acts via receptors located on the surface of cells. Leptin also plays a crucial role in muscles, as evidenced by the abundant presence of its receptors there. Studies in animals allow us to understand better the function it fulfills there. There is a strain of mice in which the leptin-producing gene has been knocked out. 

In these animals, deficiency of this compound is associated with lower muscle mass than usual.  As part of a study carried out in Spain, researchers observed the effects of administering leptin to these animals, focusing on their muscles. They found that the intervention allowed the mice to gain muscle mass. They have uncovered some underlying mechanisms.

Anti-Catabolic Effect

Leptin blocked the action of a compound, FoxO3a. This is a transcription factor, a combination capable of governing the activity of specific genes. It activates two of them, in particular, MAFbx and MuRF1. These genes are responsible for the production of enzymes and ubiquitin ligases, which destroy muscle fibers. The administration of leptin thus made it possible to delay this phenomenon. Furthermore, the production of myostatin, a protein that opposes muscle growth, was decreased, while that of PGC-1α, which exerts beneficial effects on muscle, increased. 

Anabolic Effect

Another team confirmed the impact of leptin on muscle mass and strength. Although she did not observe a protective effect of leptin against muscle catabolism as in the previous study, she highlighted its ability to activate muscle protein synthesis, which is commonly called “anabolism.”. These data echo previous work carried out on muscle stem cell cultures. They revealed the synergy between leptin and leucine,  an amino acid with anabolic power, to regulate protein metabolism within muscles.

Control Of Muscle Contraction Force

Leptin is decisive not only for muscle mass but also for their functioning. Abnormalities in calcium flows at the level of muscle fibers were detected in mice deprived of the action of leptin, which caused premature fatigability. The work carried out by the American team revealed this type of anomaly in mice devoid of fatty tissue. In these animals, a drop in maximum contractile tension of approximately 20% was recorded in muscles containing a significant proportion of fast-twitch muscle fibers. These type II fibers are crucial in bodybuilding because they enable explosive and powerful movements.

When the researchers reintroduced fat to a portion of these animals, to the tune of approximately 10% of their mass, contractile abilities were thoroughly restored. They were able to prove that leptin secreted by adipocytes was responsible because this experiment carried out in animals that did not react to it proved unsuccessful. This work is entirely in line with observations that have always been made in the sporting field: when you lose a lot of fat (for example, in the context of cutting ), strength drops sharply, even without a change in lean muscle mass.

A Balance To Find

If the presence of fatty tissue appears crucial for muscle development and strength, its excess is, on the contrary, harmful. Being overweight leads to increased production of leptin. Analyzes have shown that its average blood concentration is just over  30 ng/ml in obese people, compared to 7.5 ng/ml in thin people. This influx of leptin causes the body to become desensitized to its action. Its receptors are produced in lower quantities, both in the brain and muscles. In these circumstances, it can no longer exert its muscular benefits optimally.

Furthermore, the increase in the volume of fats in the body promotes insulin resistance. This hormone, produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar, has favorable effects on muscle development. It stimulates protein synthesis and fights against their degradation. However, many weightlifters or “strong men” are overweight or even obese. This paradox could be explained by the fact that practicing intense physical activity protects against insulin resistance and leptin resistance. These athletes thus manage to obtain the benefits of high leptin levels without having all the disadvantages.

Fat Assists In Muscle Regeneration

Muscles have great regenerative capacities, which make it possible to repair damage caused by sports practice or an injury. They are based on the existence of stem cells, satellite cells located on the surface of muscle fibers. They can multiply and differentiate to replace damaged tissue. However, they do not work alone; they are notably assisted by another type of cells, fibro-adipogenic progenitors (FAP), also residents of the muscle. When intact, they are in a dormant state. In the event of muscle damage,  they begin to increase and stimulate the multiplication of stem cells, which will rebuild the muscle.

Fat Is A Reserve Of Stem Cells

In this process,  fatty tissue plays a significant role that has remained unknown for a long time. Work recently published in the journal  Nature describes it. The researchers who conducted them started from a singular observation. In the event of an injury, the proliferation of FAP present within the muscle tissue only occurs three days after its occurrence.

 However, cells of this type that are already activated are visible much earlier, within a few hours. So, where do they come from? Noting that fatty tissue located under the skin contains cells strongly resembling FAPs – a type of stem cell called adipose stromal cells or ASCs – they hypothesized. The subcutaneous fatty tissue would act as a reservoir of these cells with healing effects.

Migration Of Fatty Tissue Toward Muscle

Several experiments were conducted to test this hypothesis. One of them showed that when a muscle undergoes injury, the increase in the amount of FAP in the power goes hand in hand with the decrease in the amount of ASC in the subcutaneous fat. This first analysis argues in favor of a transfer of cells from one tissue to another. This migration was then confirmed using fluorescence labeling of the ASCs, which made it possible to visualize their infiltration within the injured muscle. It is, therefore, the fat that provides the power to the cells, which will facilitate the repair of damage in the early stages following the injury.

Protection Against Injuries

In this same study, researchers also showed that blood taken from athletes after training has a robust and attractive effect on these ASCs. It could be mediated by a messenger, GDF-15, which reflects the level of muscle fatigue. The ASCs of the fatty tissue would thus be mobilized as soon as the muscle begins to emit distress signals, with the aim of preserving its integrity and avoiding damage.

A Makeover For Aged Muscles

Fat tissue stem cells have a strong potential in terms of regeneration thanks to another mechanism. Like many cell types, they emit extracellular vesicles. These particles ensure the transfer of signal molecules (proteins, small RNA, and DNA) between cells. They arouse particular enthusiasm for regenerative medicine.  

One study examined the effects of administering extracellular vesicles from adipose tissue stem cells taken from young mice to aged mice. Animals thus treated showed fewer signs of fragility than their peers of the same age. They performed better on tests assessing their physical abilities. The quality of their muscles was improved, with more numerous and thicker fibers and fewer fatty deposits. Levels of oxidative stress and inflammation were also reduced.
